On May 13, 2026 Instagram launched a new feature that has the internet screaming.

The feature called Instants allows users to DM photos that cannot be edited and can only be sent to close friends and followers. Plus, the photos disappear after 24 hours (PSA: if you are sending nudes, beware. You can access them in archives up to a year later). So yes, basically Snapchat or BeReal.
The feature has also launched as its own mobile app, Instants, an Instagram app, which is available in limited countries, including the US. The prevailing take on the timeline is that this is copy/ pasta.
The next collective feeling was that IG is doing too much, none of which anyone asked for.
Elon also weighed in on IG this week (unrelated to this feature) and, it pains me to say this, but I agree with the man.

It is too early to tell in what way this will be used, but I have my suspicions (teens sending things they will greatly regret later in life). This suspicion felt subtly validated by the fact that a big ole portion of their announcement landing page was dedicated to safety and privacy, including a no-screenshots term. Ultimately, this feature could end up in the graveyard of past failed dupes they have attempted, like IGTV and IG Candid. But hey, maybe I’m just chopped and people will love it. This guy certainly does:
Here is the thing. Instagram has over ~3 billion monthly users, which means 37% of the global population unlocks their phone and clicks on that pink camera icon at least once a month. And when you are putting up numbers like that, retention, not only for current users but for future users, has to be top of mind, especially when TikTok and YouTube are eating your lunch with the youngsters.

I pray that Gen Alpha won't be using Instagram in the same way their parents did. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
