Can we stop going on cruises? Plz.
About six weeks ago, a group went bird watching in Ushuaia, Argentina. One person potentially inhaled rodent droppings (?!), then boarded the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, fell ill, and infected several others with a virus called Hantavirus.
Since the boat's departure, three individuals have died, only one of whom officially died from the virus, while the other two deaths are still being investigated.
I don't know if you remember, but in 2020 there was a virus called COVID-19, so the internet is triggered, media outlets are foaming at the mouth, and Twitter users are losing their gd minds.

People dying is obviously no good. But as of today, the World Health Organization has only confirmed 5 cases so the level of hysteria happening on the timeline is really showing how many of us are still working through something from the early 2020s.
We all know it only takes one. But as of today, the CDC has classified its response at Level 3, the lowest classification, (for the record, the 2014 Ebola outbreak was Level 1) and WHO Director-General Tedros said in a press conference yesterday, 'While this is a serious incident, WHO assesses the public health risk as low.'
Now, there's some good news and some bad news for you. Good news is there is only one strain of Hantavirus that can be passed person-to-person (different from COVID, which could spread easily through the air) and with that, you've got to clock some time with that other person to get it, think BFFs, lovers, fam members, etc.
The not-so-good news is that it appears the incubation time for this virus can go up to 6 weeks (unlike COVID's which was 2-14 days). Meaning you could be infected and unknowingly carrying it while walking around, hitting the club, getting on a plane, and more! But some nuance here is that some are saying you need to be symptomatic in order to spread this one.
Having said all this, who knows, by this time next week we might be opening our window and banging cookware just to feel something.
