Bonjour,

We’re back from SF, where we did a cute thing with Base and Voices Onchain. If you were there, cute pics of you here.

We’ll be at the Aptos Experience next week, if you are in NYC, meet us for coffee!

Polygon is shipping at a clip. BIG payments upgrade just rolled out and sounds like they’re only getting started.

The announcement of Polymarket’s $2 billion raise somehow made everyone temporarily insane, convincing them that posting screenshots of private conversations with the CEO was an okay thing to do under the guise of clout farming.

What was forgotten in this act is that clout farming in this way equals negative aura points. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!!!!!

Let me explain. The concept of aura is cultivating an intangible cool factor that is spiritual in nature and vibes driven. The act of aura farming is doing the work to curate said aura. Cheryl covered the crypto POV this summer.

The term has been around for a while. But it picked up major steam on the timeline last year when videos of an 11-year-old Indonesian boy calmly dancing while balancing on the front of a racing boat went viral.

He aura farmed so close to the sun he actually kinda crashed out.

One can both gain and lose aura points through specific actions, or in some cases, by not acting at all.

Now, clout farming is the act of leveraging someone else’s aura for yourself. For example, our live streaming from the a16z offices in Menlo Park earlier this week was pretty textbook clout farming.

What’s tough about clout farming though, is that it’s a delicate balance. It can both earn you “plus aura points,” or it can lose you “minus aura points.” The crème de la crème is when the clout farming is synergistic. It’s gotta be mutually beneficial for both parties.

Exhibit A. is Kylie Jenner wearing a Marty Supreme jacket, the title of Josh Safdie’s new movie starring her man, Timothée Chalamet. It’s already getting Oscar buzz, and promises the greatest press tour of our lives. This is the art of the co-clout farm.

Exhibit B. Last week, Air Mail, the media publication, collaborated with Anthropic, the AI company, for a pop-up in NYC. It was tasteful clout farming that benefited them both.

Unfortunately for us all, tech twitter took it too far and this is why we can’t have nice things.
